Dreaming of engagement photos or an elopement that feels like you're wandering through the Italian countryside or exploring the streets of Florence - but not planning a trip overseas? You might be surprised by how many places around the San Francisco Bay Area capture that same timeless European charm.
From grand stone architecture and hidden gardens to cypress-lined pathways, historic fountains, and sailboats drifting across the bay, there are so many locations that create the romantic atmosphere people often associate with Italy. Whether you're envisioning a Tuscan-inspired estate, the elegance of a Renaissance museum, or a quiet afternoon that feels straight out of the Amalfi Coast, you don't have to leave Northern California to find it.
As a San Francisco Bay Area elopement photographer, I'm always looking for locations that feel transportive (because I'm always dreaming of being in Italy, so I have to find it all around me in the Bay) - places where it seems like you've stepped into another country without ever boarding a plane. These spots are some of my favorites for couples who love old-world architecture, lush gardens, coastal views, and that effortlessly romantic European aesthetic.
If you're planning an engagement session, anniversary photos, or an intimate elopement, here are my favorite Bay Area locations that bring a little piece of Italy to California.
Italian Villas & historic estates
Filoli historic house & garden
This is a beautiful historic estate in Woodside, California (just about 30 minutes from San Francisco). It has stunning gardens and a gorgeous mansion with a ballroom, library, formal dinning room, billiards room, and more! This is a great spot for engagement photos (unfortunately they don't allow wedding photos unless you book out the property). It's best to go here on a weekday as weekends can get super busy and spring is one of the best times here to see the gardens in full bloom.
Pulgas Water Temple
Right next to Filoli is this area that features a grand colonnade, a long reflecting pool, and classical architecture that feels straight out of Rome. Surrounded by towering cypress trees and rolling hills, it's easy to forget you're just outside of San Francisco. This spot's parking lot is only open weekdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and winter is the best time since the sun sets early, we can catch golden hour before the place closes. (Image is from Google - surprisingly I haven't gotten the opportunity to take photos here yet but you can change that!)
Montalvo Arts center
Nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this historic Mediterranean-style estate features elegant stone staircases, ivy-covered walls, formal gardens, cypress trees, and sprawling terraces that feel straight out of the Italian countryside. Every corner of the property offers a timeless, old-world atmosphere that's perfect for couples who love European architecture and classic romance. This spots requires a photo permit that costs $200 for photos with 1-5 people.
Castello di amorosa
If you're searching for a true taste of Tuscany without crossing the Atlantic, Castello di Amorosa is one of the most immersive Italian-inspired locations in the Bay Area. Tucked among the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, this authentically built 14th-century-style castle features stone walls, grand courtyards, arched doorways, towers, and rustic details that transport you straight to the Italian countryside.
The combination of medieval architecture and surrounding vineyards creates a romantic atmosphere reminiscent of Tuscany’s historic estates. Couples can wander through the castle grounds, explore charming stone pathways, and capture portraits that feel like they were taken during a European getaway.
Old-wolrd architecture
Legion of honor
Perched above the cliffs of Lands End with sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, this museum features towering columns, ornate details, grand courtyards, and classical sculptures that create a timeless European atmosphere. This spot is best during the weekday to avoid weekend crowds.
Portals of the past
Hidden among the trees of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Portals of the Past feels like a romantic piece of European history tucked away in the city. With its quiet, intimate setting and beautiful architectural details, Portals of the Past is perfect for couples who love a more understated European feel. The combination of historic stone, lush gardens, and soft natural light creates a dreamy backdrop for engagement photos and intimate elopement portraits—almost like stepping into a hidden corner of Italy without leaving San Francisco. This is one of my favorite hidden gems and is often pretty quiet here with not a lot of people milling about.
Palace of fine arts
The combination of European-inspired architecture and romantic atmosphere makes it one of the Bay Area’s best locations for couples dreaming of an Italian-inspired photo session. The elegant arches and stone pathways create a timeless, editorial feel, while the surrounding trees and water add a sense of tranquility reminiscent of wandering through a historic European garden. This place is often very busy so be ready for lots of people around, while weekdays are definitely better it's still pretty busy even then.
Music concourse
Tucked in the heart of Golden Gate Park, the Music Concourse offers a romantic European-inspired setting filled with grand architecture, lush greenery, and charming details. Surrounded by museums, gardens, and tree-lined pathways, this historic plaza feels like a quiet gathering place you might stumble upon while wandering through an Italian city. With elegant columns, arches, and intricate details that create a timeless backdrop for photos and paired with the surrounding gardens, fountains, and pathways, the Music Concourse has an effortless old-world charm that feels reminiscent of a European piazza. This is a unique spot that not many people utilize in the city for photoshoots - I recommend if you want something a bit more unique but still Italian-inspired.
De anza college
Hidden in plain sight in Cupertino, De Anza College has a charming European-inspired corner that feels worlds away from a typical college campus. The California History Center, with its grand columns, symmetrical architecture, and Mediterranean-style design, resembles a historic European estate or a Tuscan villa tucked into the Bay Area.
The building’s elegant arches, stone details, and surrounding greenery create a romantic old-world atmosphere that works beautifully for engagement sessions and intimate portraits. With the right timing—especially on weekends, during summer, or school breaks when the campus is quieter—you can capture the feeling of wandering through a European courtyard without the crowds.
Italian Gardens
Shakespeare garden
Tucked away beside the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park, Shakespeare Garden is a quiet, romantic escape that feels like a hidden European courtyard. This charming garden was created as a tribute to William Shakespeare and features winding pathways, lush greenery, seasonal blooms, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city.
Sutro heights
Perched above the Pacific Ocean on the western edge of San Francisco, Sutro Heights offers a romantic blend of coastal views, historic ruins, and European-inspired charm. The Vista del Mar structure, with its weathered stone walls, arched openings, and dramatic ocean backdrop, feels like a forgotten Mediterranean ruin overlooking the sea. Surrounded by cypress trees, winding pathways, and sweeping views of the Pacific, it evokes the feeling of exploring an old coastal villa somewhere along the Italian Riviera. This area is typically not busy and offers plenty of areas for stunning photos.
Woodminster Cascade
Tucked away in the hills of Oakland, Woodminster Cascade is a hidden gem that brings a touch of European romance to the East Bay. This elegant stone staircase and cascading fountain were inspired by classical European garden design, with tiered steps, flowing water, and lush greenery creating the feeling of a secluded villa garden.
The Amalfi coast & Lake como vibes
Sausalito + Sailboat
For couples dreaming of the coastal romance of the Italian Riviera, a sailboat adventure in Sausalito offers a uniquely Bay Area way to capture that same sense of freedom, elegance, and old-world charm. With colorful waterfront homes, sailboats drifting through the harbor, and panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the scenery feels reminiscent of the seaside villages along the Italian coast.
A private sailboat session turns your photos into an experience rather than just a backdrop. Spend the afternoon exploring the bay together, soaking in the views, sharing a quiet moment on the water, or celebrating your day with a sunset sail as the city skyline glows behind you. The movement of the boat, the ocean breeze, and the golden light create a natural, effortless feeling that feels like a romantic getaway abroad.
Row boat at blue heron lake
For a touch of Italian romance in the heart of San Francisco, a rowboat ride on Blue Heron Lake (formerly Stow Lake) feels like a scene from a quiet afternoon in the Italian countryside. Surrounded by lush greenery, winding pathways, stone bridges, and peaceful water views, this hidden corner of Golden Gate Park has a charming, old-world atmosphere reminiscent of the gardens and lakes found throughout Italy.
Drifting across the lake in a classic rowboat creates a playful yet romantic experience, giving couples a chance to slow down and enjoy a private moment together. The reflections on the water, tree-lined shores, and nearby historic landmarks create a dreamy backdrop that feels both timeless and whimsical.
Lyon street steps
With sweeping views of San Francisco, elegant architecture, and a backdrop of lush gardens, the Lyon Street Steps offer a romantic European-inspired setting in the heart of the city. Tucked between the Presidio and Pacific Heights, these iconic steps feel reminiscent of the hillside staircases found throughout Italy, where winding pathways lead to beautiful views and charming neighborhoods.
The grand staircase, surrounded by greenery, flowers, and historic homes, creates a perfect blend of old-world elegance and San Francisco charm. At the top, couples are rewarded with panoramic views of the Palace of Fine Arts, the Bay, and the city skyline—making it feel like a hidden viewpoint you might discover while wandering through a European village.
For couples who love the feeling of exploring a city on foot, Lyon Street Steps offer a romantic, editorial backdrop with plenty of movement and variety.
