Before you lock in a date, let’s talk about something most people don’t realize about San Francisco…
Our “summer” isn’t actually summer (I know, plot twist for California lol).
If you’re dreaming of sharing your vows while overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, want that golden light on the coast at sunset, or imagine the sun peeking through the redwoods in Golden Gate Park, then timing matters so much here. The Bay Area has microclimates, moody weather shifts, and one very persistent resident named Karl the Fog.

Hi! I’m Gina, a Bay Area local who’s lived here my entire life and spent the last 5+ years photographing elopements all across the San Francisco Bay Area and along the coast from Point Reyes to Big Sur. I’ve seen this place in every season, so here’s my honest breakdown of the best (and trickiest) times of year to elope here.

Spring (March–May)
One of the BEST times to elope in SF.
Spring is wildly underrated here and personally, I love it. (I'm a sucker for green hills and wildflowers!) I think the landscape in the Bay Area is prettiest during this time of year.
Pros:
- Wildflowers in places like Golden Gate Park, Marin Headlands, Pacifica, Santa Cruz, and everywhere else along the coast
- Lush, vibrant green hills (especially after winter rains - green hills don't last long in CA so I highly recommend taking advantage of it!)
- Softer fog compared to peak summer (often no fog as well! As it gets into May, however, then fog becomes more and more likeley and peaks during the summer months)
- Fewer tourists than summer
- Cooler, comfortable temperatures for hiking or exploring
Cons:
- Rain is possible (especially March)
- Some mornings can still bring fog but it's more likely to burn off during the day leaving us with beautiful golden sunsets
- Weather can shift quickly
If you’re okay with flexibility and maybe embracing a little mist or drizzle, spring is absolutely magical. And don’t worry, I always come prepared with clear umbrellas and ponchos just in case. Rainy elopements can actually feel romantic and cinematic.
Summer (June–August)
My honest take? The trickiest season.
This surprises people, but summer is actually the foggiest time of year in San Francisco. If you’re envisioning golden cliffs and ocean views… summer is when those views most often disappear. (I can't tell you the amount of times I couldn't even see the Golden Gate Bridge even while driving over it.)
Pros:
- Long daylight hours
- Warmer inland (If you’re not eloping on the coast, then summer is great and in the south bay or east bay it can be pretty hot and have beautiful golden sunsets, but the closer to the coast you get the more chance of fog you have and therefore lose the warm, golden sunset.)
- Easier travel schedules for guests (however, if it's just you and your partner then this isn't something you need to worry about!)
Cons:
- HEAVY coastal fog (especially June & July; the black and white photo is supposed to have the Golden Gate Bridge right in front of them but you can't see it due to the fog.)
- Overcast days that never burn off
- Colder than you expect (yes, even in July)
- Busier tourist season
In my experience, there is a much higher chance of fog in summer than there is rain in winter. If sweeping coastal views are important to you, I highly advise avoiding peak summer.
Fall (September–November)
THE BEST time of year to elope in San Francisco.
This is our real summer.
Pros:
- Warm, sunny days (especially September & October)
- Much less fog
- Clear coastal views
- Golden, dreamy sunsets
- Some places are still green in early fall
- Fewer crowds compared to peak summer
Cons:
- If you want stereotypical fall vibes (like colorful leaves and such) then the Bay Area is not the place to elope since we don't have foliage that pops off like that unfortunately.
Fall in the Bay Area is elite. If you want warmth, light, and a very strong chance of clear cliffside views — this is your season. September and October are especially incredible.
If I had to choose one overall winner for weather reliability? Fall takes it.
Winter (December–February)
The sleeper hit season.
Winter here is not what most people imagine. Yes, we can get pouring rain — but we also get the clearest skies of the entire year.
Pros:
- The BEST sunsets of the year
- Dramatic skies after storms (you know those sunsets where there's still some clouds in the sky and they turn all pink and purple? yeah that's what happens in the winter.)
- Often zero fog
- Fewer crowds
- Some surprisingly warm, spring-like days (it hit 75°F a few days in a row this winter [Jan/Feb 2026])
Cons:
- Rainstorms can be intense
- Shorter daylight hours
- You need flexibility
Winter elopements can feel incredibly intimate and cinematic. And again — I always come prepared with clear umbrellas and ponchos so you don’t have to stress if the forecast shifts.
My Honest Recommendation
- Spring and Fall are the sweet spots.
- Fall is the most reliable for warm, clear weather.
- Summer is the foggiest (and most unpredictable for views).
- Winter is dramatic and beautiful - just be mentally ready for rain.
If your heart is set on coastal cliffs, stunning views, and golden light then let’s pick your date intentionally. In the Bay Area, season matters more than you think. And no matter what time of year you choose, I’ll always help you plan around weather patterns, light, and backup options so your day still feels like you.
