If the thought of spending your San Francisco elopement standing around for a few hours taking photos sounds less than exciting, I have good news: your elopement doesn't have to go that way. San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area are packed with opportunities to turn your wedding day into an experience that actually feels like you - whether that means sailing across the bay, checking out a fun bar, having a picnic in the redwoods, exploring a new neighborhood, sipping wine in Napa, or chasing the sunset along the coast. As a San Francisco elopement photographer, I love helping couples create days that feel stress-free, intentional, adventurous, and completely their own. So, if you're looking for San Francisco elopement ideas that are actually fun, here are 10 ways I'd turn your elopement into a day you'll genuinely want to remember.

Hi! I’m Gina, a Bay Area local who’s lived here my entire life and spent the last 5+ years photographing elopements all across the San Francisco Bay Area and along the coast from Point Reyes to Big Sur. I love helping couples plan elopement days that incorporate fun activities that truly speak to their relationship! I hope these ideas spark excitement for you as you dream about your day!

Sailing

Sailing on the bay is always such a fun experience! Getting to see the Golden Gate Bridge from a different perspective than on land is so cool. It's private, it's fun (as long as you don't get seasick), and it's something you'll always remember!

Row Boating

This is such a romantic option for your elopement day! It's perfect for those that want to live out their own love scene like in The Notebook.

Helicopter Ride

Now this is a fantastic excursion for people who want to truly go all out on their elopement day! Seeing San Francisco from an aerial view just brings on a whole new meaning of beauty. It's not often you get to take in this gorgeous city by the bay from the sky unless you're flying in a plane and you don't get to soak in that view quite like you do from a helicopter! This would be an amazing end to your elopement day or even a fun excursion for the day after your elopement!

Picnic

During your full day elopement you're bound to get hungry as some point, right?! What better way to refuel yourselves then with a romantic picnic? You can hire a service that will make the experience that much more luxurious (they bring the blanket, pillows, glasses, plates, utensils, yummy food, and beautiful decor). Or if you're more into simplicity, then there's nothing wrong with grabbing a sandwich and eating in the park surrounded by redwoods, or on a bench overlooking the ocean, or somewhere else your soul likes to recharge. As your elopement photographer I try to come prepared with anything we may need on your day so I always have a blanket in my trunk that I love letting my couples use (just like the lovely couple in the first couple photos below)!

HorseBack Riding

Want to bring a little country to the city? Riding horses along the beach is very romantic and goes to show that just because you're eloping in San Francisco doesn't mean you have to stick to the city vibe!

Wine tasting

Napa Valley is only about an hour away from San Francisco! From gorgeous rolling vineyards, to beautiful estates (even a castle!), and delicious wine - you won't know if you're in Italy or California. This is such a fun activity for couples who enjoy nice wine and gorgeous views (you can't go wrong with some portraits out in a vineyard)!

Private Dinner

Eloping often attracts couples who value privacy and intimacy. What's more private and intimate than a dinner just for you two at your AirBNB, hotel, home, or in a private room in a restaurant?!

sip on some cocktails

There are so many cool, vibe-y cocktail bars in the city! You can go to one that has a pool table or dart board if you want a fun activity, or we can find a dark, intimate one for you to enjoy some yummy cocktails and have a quiet moment together.

Cable Car

What's more SF than cable cars?! They're the only moving National Historic Landmarks in the United States. It's the epitome of San Francisco! They're so fun and bring you to some amazing views!

Bonfire on the beach

Ocean Beach or Muir Beach are great spots that allow campfires with designated fire pits. This is a great way to relax by the glowing, warm fire, drink some hot cocoa or champagne, and really soak in the amazing elopement day you just experienced. These fire pits are first come first served so if you have any loved ones nearby that can snag a pit and get the fire going for you so all you have to do is show up and soak it in that'd be amazing.
